It is definitely true that the fundamental enabling technology for electric cars is lithium-ion as a cell chemistry technology. In the absence of that, I don't think it's possible to make an electric car that is competitive with a gasoline car.

LITHIUM FACTS

Why is lithium so important?

Lithium is a critical component of many of the technologies we rely on everyday. From cell phones to computers, to medical equipment and electric cars, lithium is recognized worldwide as a vital resource. Global demand for lithium is forecasted to exceed a million metric tonnes a year by 2025 and triple that by 2030. Projects like Big Sandy need to move forward to ensure domestic supply is available as demand for lithium grows. Unfortunately, less than 2% of the world’s lithium is produced in the U.S. leaving us dependent on foreign sources for critical lithium supplies.

Big Sandy could meet 15% of demand for lithium in the United States by 2030, significantly contributing to domestic lithium production and energy security. This will help to greatly reduce our reliance on foreign entities and position Arizona as a leader in domestic lithium production.
